Although retired, Fabian Cancellara was elected Swiss sportsman of the year at the Swiss Sports Awards ceremony held on Sunday evening.
In his final year, Cancellara won stages in Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour de Suisse and was also second in the Tour of Flanders and fourth at E3 and Ghent-Wevelgem but his standout achievement was his Olympic gold medal in the time trial.
Cancellara received 30.46% of the votes compared to 25.01% for mountain biker Nino Schurter, also crowned Olympic champion last summer, and 18.23% for tennis player Stan Wawrinka, winner of the US Open. In the women's category, skier Lara Gut was rewarded.
