With a flat start and tough finale, stage 18 from Melide to Verbania (170 km) might be the last chance for an escapee to win a stage in this Giro. A man who’s always keen to race and who sprinted to sixth place yesterday is Stig Broeckx.
“We wanted to play a role in yesterday’s finale. Adam [Hansen] had a go pretty early, I was positioned on the front rows as well, but the pace was high and the attack of for example Philippe Gilbert was too fast. Nonetheless I maintained a good position and that’s why I wanted to get a nice place in the sprint.
“I still feel good and I’m still happy to be here in the Giro. In stages which go uphill immediately after the start, like yesterday, it isn’t easy to join a break, but today might be an opportunity for riders like Lars Bak, Adam Hansen or me. Because of the flat start a breakaway might stand a chance.”
