Grischa Janorschke found it hard to believe he’d won the points jersey in the Bayern-Rundfahrt after very active racing, being part of the break on two of the four road stages.

Not being able to participate in the race in 2012 due to injury makes the 25-year-old’s achievement even greater: “If someone had told me at the start of the race that I would take this jersey home Sunday night, I wouldn’t have known what to answer.”

“We had a plan B. And this plan worked out at the last intermediate sprint,” sports director Werner Salmen was pleased with his riders who had fully supported their leader.

On the last stage from Kelheim to Nürnberg, Janorschke broke away from the field with three other riders, and he won all three intermediate sprints on the stage, taking the points jersey from Gerald Ciolek.

“The only way to win the jersey was to go into the break today [yesterday],” Janorschke said to the race website. “I tried several times on the first 20 km, but Martin Reimer watched me, and I couldn’t pull away. But the sidewind and the climbs split up the field, and finally I could make the move and get away. Luckily I coped well with the weather, but it was rather extreme for the end of May.”

DS Erik Serafin was jubilant: „Grischa did everything right. He was doubtlessly the most active rider in the race. Out of 700 km he spent 350 in breakaways, that’s a very, very strong performance.”

Janorschke’s strong presence was underlined by his second place in the mountain classification.
