As expected, today’s first stage of the Tour of Qatar saw the sprinters fighting against the wind. After the start in Dukhan and 136 kilometers, Spaniard José Rojas (Movistar) won the stage in Sealine Beach. In the sprint of a group of 50 riders, he relegated Tom Boonen (Etixx-Quick Step) and Arnaud Demare (FDJ) to the minor podium spots. BORA – ARGON 18 sprint captain Sam Bennett sprinted to the 5th rank, underlining his great form. With his stage result, Bennett currently claims the third rank in the white jersey competition of the best young rider.
“The wind made the day today, and thus we saw some hectic race situations. With twenty kilometers to go, our guys rode actively in front and with other teams they caused the split of the peloton. They did an outstanding job. We were with five, six riders in the first group and were able to place Sam in a good position for the final. For the opening, we got the most out of it. Considering the great line-up here in Qatar, we are satisfied with a fifth rank today. But our goal for the upcoming days remains crystal-clear: we want to improve to be a factor front and center”, says BORA – ARGON 18 Sport Director Andre Schulze after the first stage.
With 194 kilometers, tomorrow will be the longest day in the Tour of Qatar. The riders will go from Al Wakra to Al Khor Corniche, south of the capital Doha, in the second stage. Once again, it’s expected that the wind will play a major role in the decision of the stage.
