The final stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour was raced today on the Yas Marina Circuit. The riders had to cover 20 laps of 5.5 kilometers each.
With 15 kilometers to go, a breakaway duo was caught and immediately a counter attack happened. Again, two riders tried to escape. But on the completely flat high-speed track this attempt wasn’t successful either. The field allowed never more than 11 seconds to the escapees and kept them in sight.
Entering the final lap, the duo was caught and the field prepared the mass sprint with speeds of up to 70 km/h. Elia Viviani (Sky) sprinted to his second stage win. World champion Peter Sagan (Tinkoff Saxo) and Andrea Guardini (Astana) finished on the podium places.
Michael Schwarzmann could not intervene in the sprint, reaching the finish in 19th place. Patrick Konrad defended the 10th place in the overall standings and thus, he finished his fourth stage race of the season with a Top10 result.
"We have seen a very fast cycling race on the Formula 1 course. Our goal was to prepare the sprint for Michael as best as possible and to defend the 10th place in the overall standings for Patrick. The 10th place wasn’t in danger at all, because Patrick rode very attentively and the team supported him very well. But Michael still felt the injuries from the crash few days ago. He had to fight with it and today he wasn’t in the best shape to achieve a top result. Generally we are very happy after the race with the Top 10 and especially with the whole team performance", said Bora-Argon 18 sports director Enrico Poitschke.
