The BMC Racing Team opened the Giro d'Italia Saturday with seventh place in the team time trial as ORICA-GreenEDGE won the 17.6-kilometer race.
The BMC Racing Team finished all nine of its riders together in a time 25 seconds off the winning mark of 19:26. Tinkoff-Saxo was runner-up, seven seconds behind, and Astana Pro Team was third, 13 seconds back. Simon Gerrans (ORICA-GreenEDGE) donned the leader's "maglia rosa" jersey for ORICA-GreenEDGE.
BMC Racing Team Sport Director Fabio Baldato said it was a satisfying performance when placed in comparison to other strong teams.
"We have a young team – the two youngest riders in the race are with us: Rick Zabel and Stefan Küng," he said. "Other guys are riding their first Giro, like Silvan Dillier. We can always do better, but 25 seconds is really close to teams like Etixx-Quick Step, Sky and Katusha."
