Carlos Betancur (Ag2r) was again in the early breakaway in the Giro d'Italia but the in-form Colombian ran out of legs as the serious climbing started.
"Matteo (Montaguti) and Carlos (Betancur) were in the break of day," sports director Laurent Biondi said. "Unfortunately Carlos was not well at the bottom of the first big climb after 151km. Matteo and later the whole team stayed with him. The end result is disappointing.
"The last mountain stage tomorrow will still be difficult. The boys want to do well. They try to be in the breakaways but it's not going to last. After the huge job to try to limit the losses, it will be difficult. I'm really disappointed for my boys who did an outstanding teamwork. Tomorrow we will pass the Colle delle Finestre. It is the last big climb of the Giro. The big leaders will give their all to win the stage. "
