It has been a sad weekend for cycling. Belgian cyclist Daan Myngheer died on Monday night after suffering a heart attack. He is the second Belgian rider to die in as many days after Antoine Demoitié who was hit by a motorbike in Gent-Wevelgem .
The Roubaix-Lille Métropole rider had abandoned the opening stage of Critérium International after feeling unwell. He was taken to hospital in Ajaccio, where he died surrounded by his family.
"It is with great emotion that we announce the death of Daan. He lost his last race after struggling as a great champion", an official statement from Roubaix-Lille Métropole said. "He died this Monday, March 28 at 7.08pm in the presence of his parents, his sister Fleur Emely and her companion in the hospital of Ajaccio."
