President of the Royal Belgian Cycling League (RLVB) since 2010, Tom Van Damme now wants to step up in the international cycling hierarchy. According to information from the RTBF, the 55-year-old may be running for president of the International Cycling Union which will elect its new leader in September 2017. The election will be "a priority" for Van Damme who is already a member of the Professional Cycling Council, President of the UCI Road commission and member of the UCI Management Committee.
Former rider turned team manager Christophe Brandt has even told RTBF that the chances of his compatriot were "interesting" in light of the potential candidates. Among those expected to run for the position are Brian Cookso who has been president since 2013, and president of the European Cycling Federation David Lappartient.
However, Tom Van Damme has not announced his official candidature yet.
