Warren Barguil (Giant-Shimano) eased back into competition after a small bug in yesterday's Classic du Sud-Ardeche and did well to finish in the top 20. The double Vuelta stage winner hopes to perform even better in today's La Drome Classic.
Warren Barguil was the highest finisher for Team Giant-Shimano at the Classic Sud Ardèche today in 18th place. At the end of an attacking race it was Florian Vachon (Bretagne – Séché Environnement) who took the win as the peloton caught a late breakaway in the closing metres.
An early breakaway moved clear in the first quarter of the 195km race and soon established a large gap. But the peloton wasn’t going to give them the glory and closed the gap which set the attacks alight.
A strong move of six riders moved clear late on but they were just reeled in by front of the peloton in the finishing sprint, with some of the attackers holding on for top-10 placings.
“Today was a nice race for me to get back into the rhythm after a short break because of a bug," Barguil said. "I finished in the first group but didn’t go full gas in the sprint because it was pretty crazy. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better opportunity for me.”
