After a solid showing in the Classic du Sud-Ardeche, Warren Barguil (Giant-Shimano) continued his return to form after a recent bout of illness when he finished 8th in yesterday's La Drome Classic. Being a constant presence throughout the race, the Frenchman was happy with his condition in view of the upcoming races.

After a top-20 placing on Saturday, Warren Barguil continued his return to racing today with a strong eighth place at the first ever La Drôme Classic in France.

Barguil got in an early move which pulled away in the crosswinds before swelling to a small peloton. This proved to be too large a group and the race regrouped before he was once again on the attack in a group of 18-riders with Thierry Hupond for company.

From this group Barguil pulled away with five others in the final 50km. These riders were later joined by four others and they were to fight out the win between themselves.

With a late solo attack, Romain Bardet (AG2R) took the win, and Barguil, after a long day of attacking riding, came across the line in eighth.

“I wanted to race from the front today given the wind conditions, as it’s always easier,” said Barguil after the finish. “The first group was too large and then when the next move went with Thierry there I jumped across on my own.

“We worked really hard when I got in the small break of six but were caught by others on the second to last hill. I slipped back on the final climb but managed to get over the top with others and we clawed our way back to the group in front.

“At the end I didn’t quite manage to place myself well for the sprint. The legs are coming back after a week off due to illness and I’m already looking forward to the next race.”

“We saw a very strong Warren Barguil here today. He was there in the action at every important point and didn’t miss a beat. It’s good to see him back up to speed after a short break and bodes well for his next races.

“Thierry also rode well today, making it into the breakaway and supporting Warren. The peloton finished nearly ten minutes behind and contained Chad Haga and Thomas Damuseau.”
