The Euskadi rider Carlos Barbero won a surprise win in the Circuit de Getxo. After surviving the last climb of the race he attacked and got away with Luca Chirico, who wasn’t able to follow the wheel of the Spaniard.
Barbero, who recently took the bronze medal in the Spanish Road Race Championships, also won the Portuguese race Volta ao Alentjo which took place in March.
”This win is for all my teammates and the entire Ciclista Euskadi Foundation. The work from the two stagiaires Jon and Xabier, Mikel, Paul and Jon was amazing. The team has done a great job and the victory was very exciting, very special, with our partners, supporters and friends. Cofidis took responsibility at the front of the peloton in the last few metres. I started the decisive attack from the downhill of the last climb,” Barbero said.
Barbero believes this win can help him go further in his career after the Euskadi team will vanish after the season.
“This win can help me get further, but I have ten team-mates, who also have the same opportunity as I have. The Foundation is doing a great work by training us, giving us opportunities and confidence. Today, two of the younger guys Jon Irisarri and Xabier San Sebastian were able to live off a dream and ride with some of the best riders in the world. I think it’s a shame this time will vanish.” He finished.
