Team NetApp-Endura failed to have much of an impact on the first stage of the Tour of Denmark. In the end, they had to settle for 14th with their Austrian sprinter Daniel Schorn.
Although the first day of the Tour of Denmark, which went from Hobro to Mariager, was marked by a six-man lead group for long stretches of the race, the 157-kilometer stage ended, as expected, in a mass sprint. Danish rider Magnus Cort Nielsen (Cult Energy Vital Water) claimed victory ahead of Jasper de Buyst (Topsport Vlaanderen – Baloise) and Valerio Agnoli (Astana Pro Team). After an attack on the final climb, Daniel Schorn sprinted into 14th place as Team NetApp-Endura’s best rider of the day.
“The race was very similar to a classics race – narrow streets and a rather undulating course. The final laps included a hill with cobblestones, where there were many attacks and an extended field. In the end, there were about 40-50 riders out front, including three of our riders: Daniel, Andreas [Schillinger] and Cesare [Benedetti]. Daniel joined the attack on the hill, but unfortunately he was lacking the punch for a better finish during the final sprint. The guys had a good race and we can be satisfied with that – but the sprint didn’t go perfectly. Tomorrow offers the next chance for us. With good weather, I expect the race will be similar to the one today,” said Andre Schulze, Sport Director of Team NetApp-Endura, to sum up the day.
