Team Colombia-Coldeportes put all its cards in the final sprint on Friday April 3rd at Route Adelie de Vitre (Vitre-Vitre, 197,8 km), in France, and Edwin Avila came up with a top-10 spot that could have been much better with a little more luck.
A 70-man peloton came back together in the final kilometre, after a 10-man move – including Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) among others – had looked destined to fight for the win, having still 30” on the peloton with 4 km to go, and FrenchmanRomain Feillu (Bretagne-Seche) took the win over favorite Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and Timothy Dupont (Roubaix). Launched by teammate Sebastian Molano, Edwin Avila was fighting in fourth place with 100 metres to go, then a contact with another rider reduced his speed and saw him drop to 10th place, just ahead of Molano himself. Earlier in the day, Avila had also been involved in a minor crash, with no actual consequences.
“It was another unpleasant day, with rain falling from the beginning," sports Director Oliverio Rincon told, "and fortunately the sun came out just in time for the finish. Today we chose to stay covered and wait for the sprint, and the team executed well on a route with no great difficulties. Avila certainly was not lucky in the sprint, but the fact that he was up is a good sign for what’s next.”
Paris-Camembert, on Sunday April 5th, will be the next challenge for the same line-up (Avila, Molano, Valencia, Sarmiento, Duque, C.M. Ramirez) in the action in Vitre.
