After yesterday's stage win for Jens Debusschere, Lotto Soudal decided to ride in support of Jurgen Roelandts in stage 2. However, bad luck meant that he had to settle for second.
"Today, it was the plan that I would do the sprint," he told Directvelo. "The whole team helped AG2R La Mondiale at a certain point. We wanted to ride for the stage win.
"Two kilometers from the finish, I was perfectly in the wheel of Jens Debusschere. It was at this point that Timothy Dupont came between us, touching Jens somewhat. Unfortunately, Jens' derailleur was damaged. I had to do it without him. Normally, Jens would take me to 150 meters from the line. I had to start a little earlier. The wind was slightly unfavorable. I thought I had enough of a gap but Van Genechten passed me on the other side of the road in the last meters, much like Cavendish did with Haussler at Milan-San Remo in 2009."
