The ‘toughest stage ever’ in the Vuelta was won by Mikel Landa of Astana. Bart De Clercq finished 26th and remains sixteenth overall.
“This was indeed a monstrous stage," he said. "I didn’t feel great because I had a sore back. On the fourth climb the tempo was really high when Astana accelerated and from then on I kept my own pace. Jelle Vanendert and Maxime Monfort helped me very well to control the damage. On the last climb I gave everything I got left.
"I maintain my sixteenth place on GC, but reaching the goal of top ten won’t be easy. When my back is better, there might be opportunities to join a big breakaway like Sicard did today, that way I could gain back some time.”
