Damiano Caruso moved up one spot in the overall standings Friday on another rainy day at the Giro d'Italia after a late pile-up caught out several of the race favorites, as well as teammate Darwin Atapuma.
A day after the BMC Racing Team lost Stefan Küng to a crash, Atapuma went down with about a dozen others in sight of the three-kilometers-to-go banner in the 147-km race. He was not seriously hurt, but arrived at the finish 3:25 behind stage winner Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida). The time lost dropped Atapuma five places in the overall standings to 18th, 6:28 off the lead.
Race leader Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) was also involved in the crash and lost 36 seconds to concede the lead to Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team).
Earlier on the flattest stage of the three-week race, BMC Racing Team's Rick Zabel rode as part of a three-man breakaway for most of the day before the trio was reeled in with 17 km to go.
Saturday's stage is a 59.4-km time trial, the only individual time trial of the race.
