On Saturday, December 12, the official presentation of all the Astana teams will be held, with Alexandre Vinokourov's WorldTour team being the main attraction.
At the event in the Saryarka velodrome, five teams will be presented to local audiences: the women's team Astana Women Team ; the Track Team Astana; the two continental teams Vino4ever and Astana City; and the Astana team led by Vincenzo Nibali and Fabio Aru. The team is currently training in Calpe (Alicante).
The novelty is the Astana City team which seems to be the new name of Seven Riders, a team that was born at the end of last May and emloyed half a dozen riders from the old Astana Continental Team which folded in 2014 after several doping cases. Ilya Davidenok, Victor Okishev and Artur Fedosseyev were all suspended by the UCI for an adverse analytical finding for anabolic androgenic steroid.
In November last year, the Kazakh Cycling Federation closed the continental team and sacked manager Dmitri Sedoun.
The International Cycling Union (UCI) accepted that the WorldTour team Astana and the Continental team were two different teams and had "a legal difference" between the two structures. "The WorldTour and Continental teams are two different structures," said Philippe Chevalier, the technical director of the UCI.
