The rumors were true
Last week’s rumors proved true, and Giant has indeed agreed to become new main sponsor, and thus replaces oil company Argos. The new name of the team? Giant-Shimano.
"We are very proud of the confidence that Giant has shown in our athletes, our organization and our vision," team general manager Iwan Spekenbrink stated.
"By stepping up after our planned title sponsor departed, Giant is demonstrating their belief in the superior results, global reach and integrity we have established over the last several years. The idea of building a new concept in pro cycling, together with Giant, has been welcomed with great enthusiasm by the riders and the entire organization."
The new sponsor will hopefully allow Giant-Shimano to focus on 2014, and not worry about anything but their own success.
Last year the team enjoyed an extremely successful season (especially considering that it was their WorldTour debut), and sprinters Marcel Kittel and John Degenkolb had plenty of opportunities to prove that they are amongst the best sprinters in the world.
Argos-Shimano won a tally of twenty-nine victories, and the net result rivaled that of several of the established teams’. Even though the team is based around strong sprinters, and a drilled train, there are also a number of promising talents, and especially Warren Barguil will be interesting to follow.
