Last year Tom Dumoulin finished second in the Eneco Tour and yesterday he took another runner-up spot in a major stage race in that part of the world. After a strong time trial, he finished second behind Tony Martin in the Tour of Belgium.
Tom Dumoulin has confirmed his second place overall at the Baloise Belgium Tour today after Dries Devenyns went close to a big result on the final stage. Devenyns pulled clear in a small group in the final kilometres but was caught with just 150m from the line.
Devenyns and Dumoulin were part of a 25 man group which stayed ahead to the finish. Dumoulin tried to break the hold of race leader Tony Martin (Omega Pharma – Quickstep) but in the end had to settle for second overall together with the jersey of best young rider.
Team Giant-Shimano coach Aike Visbeek said after the final stage: “We tried today and can go home knowing that the team gave it a go today. The team were at a good level and everyone was involved in getting in moves and going with the attacks.
“The plan was to have Dries and Tom there at the finish in the front together and this worked well, with both being part of the 25 man group which formed. Tom waited until the last steep climb to give it his all but in the end Omega Pharma – Quickstep were too strong to break.
“Dries went with Martin when he attacked in the final and they went really close, getting caught with just 150m. It was another good stage and has been a strong showing from the guys all week.”
