Winner Anacona was one of the big losers in today's stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Colombian was unable to hang onto the best and slipped from 4th to 8th in the overall standings.
After his excellent stage win, Winner Anacona made it clear that he targeted a top 5 or maybe even a podium spot in the Vuelta a Espana. Yesterday he did a great time trial and so found himself in a perfect position in 4th goining into today's mountain stage.
However, things didn't pan out as he had hoped. The Colombian could only manage 13th and his time loss dropped him to 8th in the overall standings.
"Today I have to be honest to say that Winner was not super, but it has not gone completely wrong if we think of the level of athletes who contested the finale today," sports directot Joxean Fernandez Matxin said. "The climb was not really one of his favorites, with constant changes of pace that hurt our GC rider. The time loss is definitely not too big abd things are still looking good. It is a pity because we lost 4 places in the overall standings.
"Today Niemiec improved a little bit. He went at his own pace and gained ground in the end. I must also say that Cunego, Serpa, Pozzato and Favilli did well by trying to escape early in the race by all means. It is always a pleasure to see a combative team and today we were once again active."
