Limburg wants to host a major bike race at least once every ten years. According to 1Limburg, that’s the intention is in the Wieplerplan 2015-2020. The Dutch province wants to host both grand tours and the World Championships. In this way, the province wants to be known as a global cycling province.
First the province takes aim at a Tour stage. Furthermore, they are a possible candidate for the cyclo-cross world championships in 2018.
However, sponsors are required to execute the plan and that’s a difficult matter according to the plan. "The balance between public and private contributions at various cycling events is not balanced," it says. Businesses and municipalities should are asked to contribute.
The cycling province of Limburg will also try to make an effort in other aspects. The province is considering a large cycling museum in Valkenburg. Limburg wants "a museum with a provincial, national and global character,” the plan says.
