All eight riders from the BMC Racing Team were involved in a massive pile-up in the final 400 meters of Tuesday's stage of the Tour de Pologne.
Marcus Burghardt, who had been in a breakaway earlier in the 146-kilometer race, was riding directly behind the rider who caused the crash.
"I was coming up on the right side, just accelerating, and I had good speed and was moving up," Burghardt said. "Then I moved into the center to get a free wheel and the rider crashed right in front of me. I had no chance."
Only nine riders from the entire field were able to contest the finish as the crash completely closed the road behind them. Matteo Pelucchi (IAM Cycling) took the win ahead of race leader Marcel Kittel (Team Giant-Alpecin) and Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek Factory Racing).
BMC Racing Team Doctor Scott Major said Swiss national time trial champion Silvan Dillier suffered the most serious injuries. Dillier, who was celebrating his 25th birthday, was X-rayed after the race and diagnosed with a bone bruise on his lower back.
"Most of the guys went down," Dr. Major said. "Dylan Teuns was in a second crash after everyone had stopped. Ben Hermans and Alessandro De Marchi are OK."
