With 162.7km it was the shortest stage of this year’s Tour de Romandie, but definitely the most difficult one with four mountains on the menu with a total of 3408 altimeters.
It was an important day for the GC riders with a mountain top finish on Champex-Lac. After 50km of racing, the teams from the GC contenders increased the pace in the bunch as a lot of riders got in trouble. On the final climb of the day, with 5km to the finish, Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) made the winning move and retained his lead until the finish.
The new leader in the General Classification is Russian Ilnur Zakarin (Team Katusha), after finishing second in today’s stage. For Team Giant-Alpecin it was Chad Haga to be home first at 53th.
“It was a day of survival for us. Our guys came a bit in trouble on the second climb of the day. Fortunately they were able to return in the descent. On the third climb none of us was able to follow the first group, but everyone finished on time,” said Coach Dirk Reuling.
