Peña Cabarga will be back in the Vuelta a Espana in 2016. Race director Javier Guillen is looking for a spectacular finish in Cantabria and has decided to the climb which first featured in 2010, was the scene of a battle between Chris Froome and Juanjo Cobo in 2011, and was last climbed in 2013. Lastres and Corrales de Buelna will feature on the course.
According to Diario Montañés, the finish at Peña Cabarga on the 11th stage will be on August 31 after a start in the Asturian village of Lastres.It is a relatively short climb of just 5.9 kilometers, but very demanding with a 9.2% average gradient especially. Especially in the second half is tough, with ramps of up to 18%.
The Spaniard newspaper also confirms that the Vuelta will depart from Corrales de Buelna the next day, with the stage expected to finish in the Basque Country.
The climb to Peña Cabarga will be the fourth consecutive summit finish after La Camperona (8th), Naranco (9th) and Lagos de Covadonga (10th) although they will be separated by a rest day. Mirador Ézaro (A Coruña) in the third stage and San André de Teixido (Cedeira) in the fourth are the other summit finishes in the first half of the Spanish race. In total, will be ten uphill finishes in 2016. Aubisque and Aitana will feature in the second half. There will be two time trials, the opening team of 28 kilometers and an individual test between Javea and Calpe. The first six days will be in Galicia.
Guillen returned to Pena Carbarga in 2010 when Joaquim Rodriguez won after the climb had been done just once in its history, in 1979. Then the Cantabrian climb played a big role in 2011 due to the memorable duel between Froome and Cobo, with the Brit coming out on top, while Vasil Kiryienka won from a breakaway in 2013.
The official presentation of the race will be held on January 9 in Santiago de Compostela.
