The 10th edition of the American stage race Tour of Utah will be visited by sixth teams from the best division in professional cycling. Right now, twelve teams have confirmed their presence at “America’s Toughest Stage Race”. The 2014 Tour of Utah field is expected to have 16 teams, with final invitations being extended in late April.
Two U.S.-based UCI Pro Continental teams are now part of the field to race in Utah this summer—UnitedHealthcare Professional Cycling Team and Team Novo Nordisk. UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling has fielded a team every year of the Tour of Utah since 2006.
Team Novo Nordisk, which competed four times as a Continental squad named Team Type 1 (2007, 2009-2011), is making its first appearance in Utah as a Pro Continental team. Three new Continental teams are confirmed to join Jelly Belly Cycling Team presented by MAXXIS (USA), which was announced in February—Funvic Brasilinvest-São José Dos Campos of Brazil, Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies and Hincapie Sportswear Development Team.
Among the confirmed UCI ProTeams, Team Garmin-Sharp expects to include the 2013 Tour of Utah defending champion Tom Danielson (USA) on its roster. Team LAMPRE-MERIDA, making its inaugural appearance at the Tour of Utah, expects to showcase American Chris Horner, who finished second overall at last year's Tour of Utah. Last year, Horner, who raced for RadioShack Leopard Trek, became the first American to win the Vuelta a España.
“The Tour of Utah continues to attract an impressive field of teams each year. Hosting six ProTeams who will be racing at the Grand Tours, like the Giro and Tour de France, speaks volumes about how this race has grown into a highly-respected event for international cycling. These top-level teams, representing four continents, will make the 10th edition of the Tour very exciting in August,” said Steve Miller, president of Miller Sports Properties, which operates the Tour of Utah.
